A Fond Farewell, A Heartfelt Thank You
Dear Family of Faith,
I write today to share with you some news. Effective February 1st, 2022, I will be leaving St. Ben’s. I will take on a new role as Director of Music Ministry at St. Clement Parish in Lincoln Park. January 23rd will be my last Sunday. I will take the final week of January to spend some time in spiritual retreat as I prepare for my new role. I have put a lot of thought and prayer into making this decision, and this is the right thing for me at this time. This was my decision, and I am grateful for the support I have received from Fr. Steve, Rachel Gemo, and the rest of the staff.
I know that change can be difficult, and the future can seem uncertain. However, change opens the door to new possibility. When I started at St. Ben’s, I took on the mantle of several great musicians before me. I would like to think that my chapter in this legacy has been good overall, filled with spiritual growth, great times, and good music. I would also believe that there are even greater chapters yet to be written. The truth is the parish music ministry has never really belonged to me. It belongs to the amazing volunteers that serve as cantors, choristers, and instrumentalists. It belongs to those that belt out the songs from the pews and stay for all the verses of the final hymn. It belongs to you, the people of St. Ben’s. I am so honored that you have trusted me to be a steward of this ministry for nearly nine years, and I hope that I have done right by you. I can honestly say that I have found a spiritual home here. I will always treasure the music, memories, and friendships that I have made.
I have already been working with Fr. Steve on a transition plan. This will involve the creation of a search committee comprised of staff and parishioners. Some of you might be asked to serve in this capacity. Until a permanent replacement is found, we will have interim help from several wonderful musicians. I also have complete confidence that our talented team of cantors and choristers will step up during this time of transition. Rest assured; the music at Mass will continue without interruption.
Finally, I just want to say thank you to everyone that has made my time at St. Ben’s the best chapter of my life so far. First, to our choristers, cantors, and instrumentalists: I am eternally grateful for the many hours you have dedicated to our ministry. I am so proud of what we have achieved together, and I know you will continue to make great music. Second, to Fr. Steve and the entire parish and school staff: thank you for your unwavering support throughout the years. I am so honored to have worked alongside you, and you have helped me to grow both professionally and personally. Last, but certainly not least, I want to thank our parishioners. From the beginning you have welcomed me, supported me, and even put up with some questionable hairstyles. I am grateful. At the end of this article, I have included several photos from my time here. These highlight just a few of my countless fond memories. Thank you, everyone, for the laughter, the joy-filled moments, and most of all, for the music we have created together.
With sincerest gratitude,
Jeremy J. Kiolbassa
