May He Rest in Peace

We continue to mourn our loss and celebrate the life of our beloved pastor, Fr. Stephen Kanonik, who passed away on January 7, 2025, at the age of 68.

Bishop Robert Casey was the presider at Fr. Steve’s Funeral Mass and read the following letter from Cardinal Blase Cupich.

Fr. James Kastigar, a classmate of Fr. Steve’s, gave the homily at the Funeral Mass on January 14. Click here for a transcript of the homily.

Rev. Stephen F. Kanonik, was the beloved son of the late Stephen and Helen; loving brother of Elaine (David) Osborne, Bernadette, Donna (William) Kaatz and Robert; fond uncle and great uncle of Carolyn Kaatz, Jason (Kelly Tang) Kaatz, Stephen (Olivia) Kaatz, Gabriel Kaatz and Angela Kaatz. Fr. Steve was the former pastor of St. Juliana and St. Ladislaus, and former associate pastor at St. Louise De Marillac and St. Bruno parishes. He also served as moderator of the curia for the Chicago Archdiocese.

In lieu of flowers, the Kanonik family suggests donations to the St. Benedict Parish Endowment Fund.
